Greater Manchester fire and rescue service said on Wednesday evening that the fire had been contained, but declared it a major incident and said they would have “a significant presence” at the scene for at least a further 24 hours. The building is run by the University of Manchester, the Christie NHS foundation trust and Cancer Research UK. It forms part of the largest single-site cancer centre in Europe, which treats around 40,000 patients a year. A spokeswoman for the hospital said: “All the associated areas have been evacuated, including any patient areas.
