In his retirement, he has kept his hand in the game, training harness racing horses as a hobby. He thought part of the industry's problems traced to a deep rift between the small towns and the bigger tracks and cities, that went back decades. A small town track win could cover a trainer's costs for months, with a little set aside to invest. Between the trainers, and the various industry merchants and staff, who bought and sold in Woodville, racing was a huge part of the town's economy. It was the same in all the small racing towns, and it was still true to a lesser degree.
