President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina flagged off the distribution of smart cards on Oct 3 last year. The World Bank has funded the project under the Identification System for Enhancing Access to Services or IDEA. Abdullah said the commission may ask the World Bank for a time extension in case it fails to meet the deadline. Otherwise, we will ask the World Bank to extend the deadline to June 2018.”The project duration has already been extended once. The Election Commission signed a deal with Oberthur Technologies, a French company, in January 2015 to make smart NID cards for citizens.
