The Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks opinion poll shows Fine Gael leading the charge, with three of the party’s candidates ahead of the pack in Dublin, Ireland South and Midlands-North West. Mary Lou McDonald’s party is now neck and neck with Taoiseach Simon Harris’s Fine Gael who are up three points to 22pc in the last month. Fianna Fáil looks set to take a seat in each constituency, as will Fine Gael, which is challenging for two seats in Midlands-North West. Among Sinn Féin voters, a slim majority of 52pc still back Ms McDonald, but a sizeable 30pc now favour Mr Doherty for the leadership. Ahead of polling stations opening on Friday, Fianna Fáil are the largest party in local government while Fine Gael are second.
