Frank Capra’s 1946 film “It’s a Wonderful Life" has become a Christmas classic in part because it so beautifully captures the sentimental spirit of Christmas. But “It’s a Wonderful Life" is a Christmas movie that makes no mention of Christ. But I think Capra, who was a Catholic, reveals more in “It’s a Wonderful Life" than kindly sensations. Of course, the generous feelings Christmas arouses have a power of their own, independent of religious belief. In other words, good feelings aren’t enough to make us good people.
