Councils where air pollution regularly exceeds the legal limit of nitrogen dioxide will be required to take action Victoria Jones/Press Association WireTaxes will be increased on new diesel cars to fund measures to reduce air pollution in dozens of towns and cities, under the government’s final air quality plan. Local authorities will have to introduce charging for diesel vehicles unless they can find alternative ways of reducing pollution which will comply with legal limits within the same timeframe, the plan says. The government published its final plan today after being ordered to do so by the High Court. It includes a pledge to end the sale of all conventional petrol and diesel cars by 2040. A total of 29 councils where air pollution regularly exceeds the legal limit of nitrogen dioxide will be required to take action to reduce emissions from diesel vehicles.
