A remote fisherman's cottage made famous by the artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman will be opened to the public following a £3.5million fundraising drive. It will now be bought by the Art Fund charity, who will preserve the building, its interiors and the garden. The public will be allowed inside the cottage for the first time, by appointment, on guided visits, according to Creative Folkestone. There will also be a residency programme for artists, academics, writers, gardeners, filmmakers and others interested in Jarman and his work. He added: 'But Derek Jarman's final years at the cottage were an inspiring example of human optimism, creativity and fortitude battling against the ravages of illness, and in that context the success of this campaign seems all the more apposite and right for its time.'
