The case of a Cape Town mother accused of selling naked images of her daughter is just one of 23 the Film and Publications Board's (FPB) Child Protection team has supported the police with in the last financial year. The Child Protection team examined 733 810 images of which 3.7% (27 174) were found to constitute child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Only three cases did not contain any child sexual abuse material, said FPB interim CEO Nomvuyiso Batyi. The FPB is a support service to law enforcement in the analysis of content suspected of containing CSAM, more commonly known as child pornography. The Films and Publications Amendment Act is one of the key pieces of legislation in South Africa that makes the exposure of children to pornographic material, or their exploitation for the creation and distribution of child pornography, illegal.
