Frank Bainimarama, the prime minister, today abandoned plans to drop the Union Jack from Fiji’s national flag after seeing tens of thousands of Fijians rally around it after their sevens rugby team won the nation’s first Olympic gold medal last week. The Fijian flag has carried the Union Jack since 1908. Mr Bainimarama has been a strong advocate of dropping the Union Jack because he believed it placed too much emphasis on Fiji’s past.…
