The Vice President of the Economic Community of West African States, Ms. Finda Koroma, says the only successful way to fight terrorism within the region is to attack its root causes. Koroma said this at the inauguration of the Early Warning Study on the Spillover of Violent Extremism to ECOWAS Coastal Member States, in Abuja on Monday. ”This need to address the root causes of violent extremism was specifically mentioned by the United Nations Secretary-General in his Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism of December 2015. ”This explains why Côte d’Ivoire saw a major escalation of violent extremism throughout 2020, including its first jihadist attacks since the 2016 Grand Bassam incident. Onyeama also spoke on Nigerian government efforts to tackle terrorism and violent extremism.
