Hollie Tawhiao of Hamilton painted this portrait of her grandmother, Rangiaho, the second wife of her grandfather, Tomairangi Tāwhiao. She's our line and I wanted the chance to reconnect.”When it comes to portraits created by Māori artists, it isn’t just the mediums of painting and photography in which they can be depicted. Whakairo (carving) and raranga (weaving) patterns, ceramics, and even tokotoko walking sticks are all ways in which the artists’ tūpuna (ancestors) can be represented – and many of those mediums are featured among the finalists in the country’s first portraiture award in honour of Kiingi Tuheitia. SUPPLIED Te Awamutu's David Grace created this Pekerangi kakahu that has a special taniko pattern representing his great, great, great, great gandmother Mere Tupara, a reknowned weaver. This competition is a chance for Māori artists to shine and the Kiingitanga is proud to support the arts in this way,” said Archdeacon Ngira Simmonds, ranga tiki (chief of staff) for the Office of The Kiingitanga.
