Felons guilty of minor drug and property crimes will get more time to have convictions downgraded to misdemeanors

Californians with felony convictions for some minor drug and property crimes will now have more time to ask that their convictions be changed to misdemeanors. Jerry Brown signed legislation Wednesday that removed the three-year time limit on felons asking for their crimes to be reclassified under the rules approved by voters as Proposition 47. The 2014 ballot measure made misdemeanors out of a series of nonviolent crimes. And it allowed ex-offenders to have their felony convictions reduced as long as they didn't have a record of violent crimes. The new law extends the deadline five more years, and even longer if a former offender is able to show good cause.
