OTTAWA — The next federal budget will include more money for First Nations child welfare services on reserves, Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott said Wednesday — but she stopped short of saying how much. “You have noted the gap between the resources provided for child welfare for Indigenous children and non-Indigenous children. However, it will take more than money to solve the child welfare crisis, she added. She did acknowledge, however, a “significant change” since Philpott took on the Indigenous Services portfolio. “I definitely see a difference in tone, and now I want to see differences in children’s lives.”The federal government has said it plans to hold an emergency meeting on Indigenous child welfare in January.
