The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said Thursday it has completed an environmental review of the kinds of activities needed to study offshore wind sites. But it allows developers to move forward with planning ambitious offshore wind projects in the area, called the New York Bight. It has approved three offshore wind projects thus far and numerous others are in the planning stages. The federal government has set a goal of approving enough offshore wind projects nationwide by 2030 to produce 30 gigawatts of electricity — enough to power 10 million homes. In each instance, the agency determined that the process of investigating the sites' suitability for offshore wind development would not cause significant harm.
