Federal Trade Commission Begins Investigating Facebook


The Federal Trade Commission said Monday it has opened an investigation into Facebook’s privacy practices. The FTC said it was probing whether Facebook violated a 2011 agreement settling claims it was deceiving users about its privacy policy. At the time, the company was accused of repeatedly allowing consumers’ private data to be shared and made public. Facebook shares fell more than 5 percent following the FTC statement, continuing a drop of more than 23 percent from the peak on Feb. 1. “Accordingly, the FTC takes very seriously recent press reports raising substantial concerns about the privacy practices of Facebook.
