Fears of church divisions over harambees

While the Anglican Church banned donations in the church — but allowed the same outside the sanctuaries — the National Council of Churches of Kenya waded into the thorny issue of harambees, saying they are integral in the church’s growth. NCCK deputy general secretary Nelson Makanda said harambees have existed since the history of the church, though in various forms and continue to support church activities. He says unless someone comes back to church and confesses having donated proceeds of corruption, it would be impossible for them to tell the source of such offerings. Bishop Mark Kariuki, the Overseer of the Deliverance Church, also said it is difficult to determine clean or dirty money. Mount Kenya East African Pentecostal Church bishop Gilbert Maina strongly condemned Sapit’s proposal of banning church fundraisers.
