Fears for unique community of private huts on conservation landMatthew Tso/Stuff Private huts on conservation land in the Orongorongo Valley near Wellington could soon be consigned to history if licence arrangements are not modified. Marcus Coomer, president of the Orongorongo Club - an association of hut licence holders, caretakers and users - said the average licence holder was now aged in their 60s or 70s. Having fun and socialising with other hut members was a big part of the hut community. While club members had an obvious stake in keeping the huts, Coomer said they also held historic value and were a unique slice of New Zealand's cultural heritage. MATTHEW TSO/STUFF Building techniques and materials vary widely among Orongorongo huts.
