Farms given go-ahead for 2,500 non-EU workers after Brexit

The scheme has been met with criticism because of its 2,500 yearly migrant cap CHRIS RATCLIFFE/BLOOMBERG VIA GETTY IMAGESBritish fruit and vegetable growers will be able to recruit up to 2,500 migrants a year under a new pilot scheme designed to alleviate the expected shortage of seasonal workers after Brexit. The new temporary work visa for agricultural workers will allow non-EU nationals who come to the UK to work on farms to stay for six months before returning. The scheme will start in spring next year, when the UK is due to leave the EU, and run until the end of December 2020. The National Farmers' Union (NFU), which has consistently raised concerns over labour shortages, welcomed it as a "major victory". However, the scheme has been met with criticism because of its 2,500 yearly migrant cap.
