The sector is expected to be the worst affected by the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union; possible new tariffs and extra customs requirements threaten to have a severe impact. The Oireachtas agriculture committee has suggested consideration of exchequer supplements EU assistance payments from 2020. The recommendation was contained in its second report on the impact of Brexit on the agri-food and fisheries sectors. In June, the European Commission outlined plans to reduce funding for the common agricultural policy (CAP) by 5 per cent from 2021.
