Rice farmers in Western Kenya have renewed optimism the planned upgrading of the Lake Basin Rice Mill in Kisumu will create ready markets for them and boost their income. "The upgrade by procuring a new mill will enable the company to take more paddy from farmers,” Okoko said. For IR and eater- white rice costs Sh37 -38 per kilo while Pishori and Basmati fetch Sh65 to Sh68 depending on the area. Upon commercialisation in 2010, the LBDA rice mill complex specialised in processing and sale of high quality graded rice, both aromatic and non-aromatic, branded as Lake Basin Pishori Rice and Lake Basin White Rice. Like the majority of rice millers, LBDA relies wholly on rice farmers within the Lake Basin region to supply the raw material.
