Farmers launch nationwide petition against freshwater rules

Bryce McKenzie of Pomahaka, left, and Laurie Paterson of Waikaka, formed Groundswell NZ to protest against the Government’s new freshwater rules. The group that organised more than 100 tractors to be driven through Gore’s main street in protest of new freshwater rules are now taking their protest across the country. Groundswell NZ has launched an online petition calling for a rewrite of the essential freshwater rules, which came into force in September. Spokesperson Bryce McKenzie, of Pomahaka, said while Groundswell was founded by a group of Southland farmers, farmers right across the country would be affected by the rules, and they needed to be changed. Robyn Edie/Stuff Eastern Southland farmers hold a tractor protest rally through Gore's main street over the Government’s new freshwater rules.
