His wife Akhter had lodged a complaint with the police after Mazhar asked her to manage Tk 3.5 million for ransom. In her court testimony, Archana, a former employee and follower of Mazhar, suggested he staged his own abduction to get money for her. IGP Shahidul Hoque said Mazhar, during his disappearance, had called another number six times, apart from making calls to get in touch with his wife. Asked what measures the police would take if Mazhar's statement is proved false, Hoque said, "He is an intellectual.
