Gulshan, standing in between the elite apogee, has become the synecdoche. Gulshan-Baridhara-Banani, the heavyweights of Dhaka North, stands in unison, with its availability of multi-ethnic cuisine, its alcohol-flowing western-themed parties, its hardy-har-har conversations about world politics and modernist (if you’re above 30) and post-modernist (if you’re under) philosophy. One could even stretch that to include Mirpur, the black sheep of Dhaka North, cradling in it the mastaans of the city, and a danger of being mugged. One continues to discuss the roles of NGOs at chic North End cafes while the other “does prem” on Dhanmondi Lake. The Gulshan elite, with their liberal ideals, cannot help but see the obvious lack of logic in their neighbours.
