China has expanded an unprecedented 10-year ban on fishing in the famed Yangtze River to all its s natural waterways and tributaries to help restore the damaged river. The Yangtze River is home to 424 types of fish, of which 183 are endemic; the freshwater fish in the river comprise 33 per cent of the national total. The alarming situation has made the environmental protection of the Yangtze River, rather than large-scale development, the dominant focus of China's river development plans.
