On November 4, 2020, Ethiopia’s government launched an operation to depose the TPLF when the TPLF occupied Mekelle, Tigray’s capital. Nearly two dozen humanitarian workers have been killed, including several who were killed while distributing food. Internal conflicts can affect a country more than external pressures, as the man-made humanitarian disaster in Tigray demonstrates. This is Ethiopia’s second humanitarian disaster. A famine struck northern Ethiopia in 1984-85, killing an estimated 2 million people as a result of hunger and other ailments.
