Family marks anniversary of soldier's deathKavinda Herath/Stuff Robyn Powley and Marijke Vandevyvere visit the Invercargill Cenotaph on Christmas Eve to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Powley's grandfather John Stevens who was killed in Belgium during World War I. Like most other New Zealand soldiers fighting during the Great War, John Stevens had plans for getting his own farm when he returned home. On Christmas Eve, his granddaughters Robyn Powley, Lynley Dean and Judith Stevens and Shirley Fentiman marked the 100th anniversary of his death. For the past seven years, Vandevyvere has visited their grandfather's grave, leaving flowers and looking after the headstone. Vandevyvere held a candle at Stevens grave and brought it with her to give to the family.
