Family inequalities have an impact on childhood asthma, study says

VANCOUVER — A family’s income and education level could impact the number of times children with asthma are hospitalized, says a new study. Researchers at the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) studied children under 19 who were hospitalized for asthma over the past decade. For example, children from lower-income neighbourhoods were found to be hospitalized 1.5 times more than children in higher-income locations. Health-care workers say that this finding is consistent with that they see in their daily practice. “We typically find that those from the lower-income bracket have more poorly controlled asthma,” said Connie Yang, a pediatric respirologist at B.C.
