They was moolah in mussels, now a Marlborough Sounds farming family have made further leaps – or perhaps that should be hops – in harnessing a new cash crop. The family name has been synonymous with the outer sounds area, particularly d'Urville Island, for more than 100 years. Set up as Tapawera Farm Limited, the fledgling Kotare Hops enterprise aims to reap the rewards from the surge in demand for craft beer. However, advice from New Zealand Hops grower co-operative and established local growers Colin and Kerry Oldham, Dean Palmer as well as Brent McGlashen of Mac Hops in Motueka had eased the "new entrants" into the industry.
