Families need the basics as well as Christmas cheerMARTIN DE RUYTER Carole Sharp would like people who are giving to help struggling families at Christmas to think about donating every day items, like rubbish bags and toiletries. Nelson Salvation Army Captain Kenneth Walker said there were 1000 families in the Nelson Tasman region who would be receiving help this Christmas through the Salvation Army. The families who needed a bit of Christmas cheer were the same families who sought food and other assistance from organisations, he said. Christmas presents for families the Salvation Army is working with can be donated until Friday December 15. The Nelson Mail, at 15 Bridge St, has a Christmas tree and is collecting unwrapped Christmas presents for children and parents for the Salvation Army.
