If you believe the Independent, a pretty reputable news organisation, the giant German budget supermarket Lidl’s own brand of blended whisky, the Queen Margot 8 year old, scooped the prize for ‘Best Scotch Whisky’ at the World Whisky Awards. While this Queen Margot whisky did indeed win at the World Whisky Awards, its medal is a far cry from an outright declaration of ‘best Scotch in the world’. The World Whisky Awards hasn’t even declared its ‘best’ whisky yet, only the round one category winners. The winners for best overall blended whisky (part of round 2) and best overall whisky (round 3) won’t be declared until March 28th. The World Whisky Awards itself is aware that the story has been misinterpreted by the media.
