Fading Liberals must not forget youth diverse voters

In 2015, voter turnout among new immigrants jumped up by 14 percentage points, contributing to our highest federal voter turnout since 1993. Most of these new immigrants are settled in swing ridings in the GTA and Vancouver, and this group likely helped push the Liberals to an unexpected majority on election night. There has been a mishmash of new, formalized initiatives popping up that are specifically dedicated to promoting voter turnout in traditionally under-engaged communities, providing tailor made interventions that will increase turnout. If parties are paying attention, they will need to up their ground-game and woo diverse voters who have been traditionally under-engaged. The political power among immigrants and diverse voters dominating swing ridings is real, and may just make or break the election results this fall.
