A trove of leaked Facebook moderator memos has revealed how users are allowed to call for the death of public figures and can praise mass murders based on company's own vague definitions of what constitutes a 'crime'. Both private and public figures are protected under the policy from direct threats of severe physical harm and threats to release personal information. 'Highly visible abuse of public figures and celebrities acts as a warning – a proverbial head on a pike – to others,' Ahmed said. 'We remove hate speech and threats of serious harm no matter who the target is, and we're exploring more ways to protect public figures from harassment. As it did with the harassment and bullying policy, Facebook defended its 'recognized crimes' list when approached by the Guardian.
