The U.S. is one of only a handful of countries in the world that offers no paid maternity leave. The federal Family and Medical Leave Act offers unpaid time off to certain workers to care for children or family members. But the paid family leave Sandberg announced is perhaps even more groundbreaking. The new paid family leave benefit ― available to all workers, not just parents ― is a clear acknowledgement that welcoming a new child is hardly the only personal life event that workers need to handle.
