Facebook Takes On Fake News


It’s complicated because “Fake” is to some extent determined by the point of view, and politics of the reader. Here’s an example: this story from The Seattle Tribune claims “Trump’s Android Device Believed To Be Source Of Recent White House Leaks.” It turns out, The Seattle Tribune is a satire site -- it says so right in its disclaimer. So, Facebook will label this post as “disputed” with links to fact-checking organizations -- in this case, PolitiFact and Snopes.comGraphic: Steven RosenbaumBack in November, Facebook announced plans to address Fake News. Zuckerberg wrote that he is committed to “disrupting fake news economics. We're looking into disrupting the economics with ads policies and better ad farm detection.”While the Facebook step isn’t insignificant, Peter Kafka of Recode makes a pretty good case that the example of The Seattle Tribune shows just how reticent Facebook is to label even what is clearly fake.
