Facebook Oversight Board calls on Meta to evaluate its role in spreading violence in Ethiopia – TechCrunch


The oversight committee has overturned Facebook’s decision to revive posts because of violations of Facebook’s rules for violence and incitement, rather than the hate speech rules previously quoted by the platform. False information that fuels ethnic violence has spread on Facebook in Myanmar. Often sown by military personnell, and it is widely believed to have escalated ethnic violence that targeted and expelled the Islamic minority of the country. The Oversight Board has also ordered Meta to independently assess human rights and how well it can mitigate national language content on Facebook and Instagram’s role in exacerbating the risk of ethnic violence in Ethiopia. Last month, Meta Protected Domestic safety precautions, emphasizing the expanded application of some of the rules against false alarms and hate speech.
