FaceApp originates in Russia, which is known for cyberespionage Jenny Kane/APThe UK’s data watchdog is considering concerns raised about the FaceApp service over privacy issues. Fears emerged over the Russian company’s privacy policy after celebrities began posting highly plausible doctored photos of themselves from the app, leading to it going viral. The app allows people to submit a photo of themselves and uses artificial intelligence to transform their face to look older or younger, as well as changing the colour of their features. Using the hashtag #AgeChallenge, photos from dozens of celebrities, including the British chef Gordon Ramsay, the Canadian rapper Drake and the American pop band the Jonas Brothers, depicting them with grey hair, sagging jowels and additional lines, have been shared and “liked” millions of times on sites such as Instagram and Twitter.
