When Martin returned to the vehicle, officers observed that her speech was stuttered and slurred. She admitted that she left her five-year-old son in the running car with the windows up and the air on. They revealed that the child said he was scared and hot, so they took him into the store. In a Facebook post, the Palatka Police Department wrote that officers responded to reports of the child in the hot car and saw that the air conditioner was blowing warm air. They said the child had been in the car for 40 minutes, although Martin disputed that and claimed it had been less than ten minutes.
