FIFA 'Mini World Cup' Proposal Could Face Backlash

FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s latest proposal to ‘revamp’ soccer is to create a ‘mini world cup’ every two years as a climax to his ‘Nations League’ plan. It would act as the finals of FIFA's proposed 'Nations League' which, according to Soccerex.com, will begin with regional qualifying groups followed by intercontinental finals brackets, before the eight-team finals. Infantino sent a letter to members of his ruling council outlining how much money the proposed tournament is expected to generate for FIFA. Reuters and the Associated Press obtained this letter which estimates the proposed revamp may be worth some $25 billion over a 12 year cycle, with the winning nation of each ‘mini world cup’ receiving up to $75 million. FIFA’s proposal is trying to make these matches meaningful, but fans would likely prefer less international matches, not more.
