As Qatar has continued to invest in construction of roads, stadia and accommodation for World Cup 2022, a horror story of inhumane working conditions has grown wildly. The International Trades Union Confederation estimates as many as 1,000 migrant workers; the majority from Nepal, India, and Bangladesh, has died each year building World Cup infrastructure in Qatar. The list of incidents and reports should have stirred radical reactions and scathing critique of Qatar and, in all honestly, they should have been ‘seriously’ threatened (not just warned in passing) with having the World Cup pulled from Qatar. And it would seem, the supposedly ‘under reform’ FIFA still refuses to address this blatant and deplorable situation. Qatar is the world’s wealthiest nation per citizen, but surely FIFA can hold itself above money, especially after being wrought with corruption scandals.
