FDA Clears AliveCor's Apple Watch ECG Device

Courtesy of AliveCorThe Food and Drug Administration has cleared a band for the Apple Watch that can take an electrocardiogram reading in 30 seconds, the device's maker AliveCor announced today. After the new device, called Kardia Band, takes an ECG, AliveCor's algorithm classifies the reading as normal or potential atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart beat pattern that can increase risk of having a stroke. Kardia Band "is the first and only FDA-cleared device for the Apple Watch," and "upgrades the Apple Watch to a medical device," said Vic Gundotra, CEO of AliveCor. The alert would suggest the wearer take an ECG reading with the Kardia Band. AliveCor is selling Kardia Band for $199 and including SmartRhythm measurements in its $99/year membership program.
