F1 Race Hosting Fees Crash To Seven-Year Low

The Malaysian Grand Prix was F1’s second-oldest Asian race but prematurely broke its contract in 2017 after 18 years. However, both combined don’t even pay as much as Malaysia did so the average hosting fee sharply declined as shown in the graph below. The loss of Malaysia led to F1’s average hosting fee falling last year to its lowest level since 2012. It reversed by 3.3% on 2017 despite F1’s race contracts containing escalators which increase the annual fee by 5%. Despite this boost, as well as the 5% escalator and the addition of a race, F1’s total revenue from hosting fees still only rose by a tiny 1.4% in 2018.
