So how are veteran athletes like Roger Federer and Jo Pavey still at the top of their game? It is not ageing that causes a decline in fitness; rather, that a decline in fitness causes ageing. But here’s the good news: most of these major changes can be attenuated, delayed or reversed through frequent and vigorous exercise. Aim for 10 or 20 minutes a week of high-intensity exercise – getting your heart rate up to at least 80% of its maximum. Time-pressured people are tempted to extend exercise during a visit to the gym and skip stretching.
