It took my brain a while to let go of the kind of “Heat shields?” that actually shield one from the heat, like the kind you put on a car windshield. “Heat” is a nickname for the police, and their shields are BADGES. 41D: I’m sure this has to do with my own experiences, but this kind of clue is never not funny to me. “Person whose inner child has been released?” is MOTHER, and I’d rather not explain it.
