In the Navy, it's a big milestone when an enlisted member is selected for the rank of Chief Petty Officer. I was recently asked to write a "charge" for a new chief selectee's charge book, which is a tool for sharing leadership lessons learned. The premise of a charge book is this: experience is only half the equation when it comes to learning, the other half is reflection. If you’re of the notion that experience is the “best” teacher then consider these two points. First, there is no such thing as “best,” only “best-yet.” Second—and more empirical—one study found that reflecting on learning and experience is more powerful than learning from experience alone.
