As I drove past, I saw that a car had crashed into a tree and was on fire. The sun was coming up when I saw smoke up ahead. As I got nearer, I saw that it was a car on the verge of the motorway, and felt irritated that someone should dump a car and torch it. We reached into the smoke, pulled a young man out through the window and dropped him to the grass. I do regret leaving and not giving my details, and I’ve often thought of the man we saved and the man who probably died.
