When Casper launched its mail-order mattress company in 2014, it began a shakeup of a staid industry that had long been known for shady showrooms and eye-popping markups. CasperWith the new Casper Essential mattress, which went on sale today on Casper.com, the company is aiming squarely at these customers. The budget-minded product begins at $350 for a Twin and $600 for a Queen—hundreds less than the standard Casper's $550 Twin and $950 Queen. “We’re proud of our original Casper mattress—it’s become wildly popular—but understand that it tops many consumers’ budgets,” says Jeff Chapin, Casper co-founder and chief product officer. The chief product differences between the original Casper mattress and the Essential: The original is 1.5 inches taller (10 inches to the Essential’s 8.5 inches), features an extra layer of material (four layers to the Essential’s three), and includes a removable cover.
