'Exceptional amount of rain' moves across the South Island

MetService warned the "exceptional amount of rain" that hit the southwest of the South Island will move north up the West Coast on Tuesday. SARAH HARRIS The heaviest rainfall in the South Island was recorded in the Milford Sound. That cold front was going to move north over the South Island during the next couple of days. MetService is warning heavy rain could fall in Westland south of Otira, and in the Canterbury headwaters south of Arthur's Pass through Tuesday and into the night. In contrast to the wild weather in the south, much of the North Island is expected to stay dry.
