One example of this can be clearly seen in its overthrow of the legitimately and democratically elected government of British Guiana in 1953. Forbes Burnham (1923 – 1985) was an ambitious British educated lawyer of African origin, who returned to British Guiana following his education. The reasons for the surveillance was to provide justification for the suspension of the Constitution, particularly any association with the British Communist Party and other Communist leaders. They were subjects of surveillance by British security services in British Guiana for years prior to the general election of 1953. They turned out in large numbers to hear the British Guiana leaders speak.
