Ex-cleaner says no safety training for clearing Fort McMurray toxic ash: ‘I thought people were going to die’

Alberta OHS is suggesting companies involved in Fort McMurray cleanup provide safety equipment such as respirators, coveralls, gloves and protective eyewear, depending on the nature of the work. Dave Gallop was excited to help out when an Abbotsford-based company hired him to assist in cleanup efforts in Fort McMurray earlier this month. Gallop, who coughed throughout his interview with 24 hours, said he has been spitting up ash since leaving Fort McMurray, while his palms have been sweating profusely. “I thought, ‘How do we know there’s not toxic chemicals in this ash?’ We weren’t told anything about it. “I saw an article about there being toxic chemicals in the ash in certain neighbourhoods … like asbestos and arsenic,” said Gallop.
