PETALING JAYA: Former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan (pic) has congratulated Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah on her achievement at the polls in GE14. The 2001 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, in a letter addressed to Maria, also praised her for playing a part in "preparing the ground" for Malaysia's historic transition. "Malaysia can count itself fortunate to have MPs of your calibre to serve the root and branch reform process it is about to undertake," he added. Annan also spoke about the cooperation between Bersih and the Kofi Annan Foundation towards promoting democratic reform in Malaysia. Annan said that the recent Malaysian election has sent a "signal of hope" across the world, proving that democratic change is possible.
